The Tokyo Bunka Kaikan is a music hall where opera, ballet, and classical music concerts are held. It was established in April 1961.

This music hall is home base for the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra (東京都交響楽団), but is also well known for hosting Japanese and foreign artists.

The Tokyo Bunka Kaikan was designed by Maekawa Kunio. Across from the Kaikan is the National Museum of Western Art, designed by France’s Le Corbusier, who also planned to build a theatre hall. However, due to a lack of funds, construction of the hall was put on hold. Maekawa, who was Le Corbusier’s apprentice, decided to follow through on his teacher’s plans, and although the design is different, he built the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan based on what Le Corbusier had wanted. The Kaikan is considered Maekawa’s representative work.
