International Library of Children's Literature

Constructed in 2000, the International Library of Children’s Literature is a public national library which specializes in young children’s literature, home to books and documents from in and outside of the country. The building itself used to be an imperial library, but was rebuilt in Renaissance fashion to represent Western architecture from the late Meiji period. The library was repaired by Tadao Andō, who intended to put it to better use. In order to preserve as much historical value, the library’s outer appearance was to the greatest degree kept the same, while still undergoing serious construction. Mimicking the lighting seen in old photos, chandelier lighting fixtures were installed, and while the front exterior was left the same, the opposite side was turned into a curtained glass wall, with two more glass rooms attached to the exterior. The library is a prime example of a well designed fusion between modern western and modern architecture, a must to visit.
