Non-poto

This competition regularly sees more applicants than it has the capacity for. The marathon courses, 100km and 60km, go along the Shimanto River, said to be the last clear water river in Japan. During high water season, runners go across underwater bridges. Despite of the extreme distance, the scenery around the river encourages runners to finish the race.

Tourist locations

There is, of course, the natural beauty of Shimanto River that makes for an excellent spot to tour. Famous for Kochi Castle, Katsura Beach, and for being the birthplace of Sakamoto Ryoma, Kochi has plenty of sights to see. Remember to try yuzu (Japanese citron) products and katsuo no tataki (lightly roasted bonito served with sliced garlic and onion), famous cuisine of Kochi.
